In Harm’s
Way - Anguillian’s Must Prepare for the Hurricane Season
Date Posted: June 03, 2008. Press Release - Mrs
Elizabeth Klute
The first of June, officially marked the beginning of the
2008 Atlantic hurricane season. The US National Weather
Service Climate Prediction Center’s 2008 Atlantic Hurricane
Season Outlook calls for a 90% probability of a near-normal
or above-normal hurricane season.
Forecasters said they expect 12-16 named storms, 6-9 of
which will be Hurricanes, 2-5 of which will be Major
Hurricanes.
As if to highlight their comments, over the past weekend
Arthur became the first Atlantic storm of 2008. The second
Atlantic/Caribbean storm will be named Bertha.
It is important to remember Hurricane disasters can occur
whether the season is active or quiet. Residents,
businesses, and government agencies of coastal and
near-coastal regions should prepare for every hurricane
season regardless of the seasonal outlook.
The Department of Disaster Management, CDERA, the Red Cross
and the US National Hurricane Centre all provide important
hurricane preparedness information. It only takes one
hurricane (or even a tropical storm) to cause a disaster.
The Department of Disaster Management encourages the public
to clean up debris or outdoor sporting equipment in yards,
secure building materials that may damage you or your
neighbors property, check shutters and review their personal
preparedness plans. Ensure that supplies of water, emergency
food, medicine and other personal necessities are ready
should persons need to relocate for shelter during a
threatened storm.
Information on how to prepare a personal disaster plan is
available free from the Department at the James Ronald
Webster Building, The Valley.
