Optimists
Promote Literacy in Anguilla

Anguilla
– Members of the Super Stars JOOI Club at the Road Primary
School hope to get younger students reading and to develop a
love for reading by volunteering to be a part of the schools
‘Reading Buddy’ Programme.
The Reading Buddy Programme which is coordinated by Tr
Shauna Connor at the Road Primary School is benefiting
greatly by the involvement of the Super Stars members who
are keen to give service to their school and community in
any way that they can.
On 29 of May 2008 Optimist Emma Ferguson the Optimist
Advisor of the Super Stars Junior Optimist Club made a
donation of 120 beginners’ books to the brand new reading
room at the Road Primary School. It is no coincidence
either, that this presentation was made in the month of May
which was designated the ‘JOOI of Reading Month’ in the
Optimist Caribbean District. Optimist Emma remarked ‘We want
the children to discover how much fun reading can be. We
don’t want them to think of reading as just a class room
activity, but for them to enjoy reading and to get to the
stage that they will pick up a good book and read just for
the joy of it!’
The JOOI Club is part of Junior Optimist Octagon
International (JOOI) the youth clubs component of Optimist
International, one of the world’s largest service club
organisations. The JOOI organisation recently began a
programme called the JOOI of Reading to help children
discover the fun of reading and improve literacy rates at
the same time.
The Super Stars JOOI Club has been active at school and in
the community since 2006. They have partnered the Johnno’s/Anguilla
National Trust/Digicel beach clean up programme.
JOOI has a membership of more that 18 000 students in almost
675 clubs throughout the Caribbean, North America and other
areas in the world. To learn more about JOOI please visit
