Anguilla’s
Finalist Selected for the 2008 “My Caribbean” Essay
Competition

Miss Avern Gumbs a student at the Valley Primary School has
been adjudged Anguilla’s finalist for the 2008 My Caribbean
Essay Competition.
She will join her counterparts from twenty-two (22)
Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) member states for the
Grand Prize Competition which will take place as part of the
official activities for the 31st Caribbean Tourism
Conference slated for October 2008.
The other Anguillian finalists named for the national
segment of the 2008 Conde Nast “My Caribbean Essay contest
were: Susan Singh and Javelle Gumbs of Valley Primary
School as well as Jahvez Hamilton and Jeralyn Harrigan of
Stoney Ground Primary School. The students were required to
write a 250 – 500 word essay on the topic, “If you could
share a secret about your island with someone visiting for
the first time, what would it be?”
The essays of the five finalists’ were sent to Barbados,
where they were examined by a panel of judges under the
direction of the CTO, to select Anguilla’s finalist.
The Conde Nast Essay competition, now in its 17th year is
sponsored by Conde Nast Traveller Magazine and the Caribbean
Tourism Organization.
