'CHESS FOR
CHANGE', NOW IN ANGUILLA’S SCHOOLS
Date Posted: June 25, 2006.
Over the years Covecastles and its homeowners have supported
many of the programmes for youth on Anguilla and have been
major funders for the Anguilla Tennis Academy and a number
of various educational awards to Anguilla’s students.
This past year June and Myron Goldfinger gave art awards to
students of the Alwyn Alison primary School. And now, David
Berman, a homeowner of one of Covecastles Beach Houses, has
presented an opportunity to teach chess, especially to our
primary school students. The Education Department did not
hesitate to take up the offer and expose all students to a
game that research has shown “makes kids smarter, helps them
do better in other subjects” and also “develops the brain”.
Through the efforts of Mr. Berman, David MacEnulty paid a
visit to Anguilla and he took the opportunity to visit all
primary schools to share his enthusiasm for chess with the
students. A movie 'Knights of the South Bronx' was made
about David's experiences in the Bronx where he taught poor
kids chess, and they went on to be national champions
against all 'the rich kids'. At the time it was all over the
news and they were invited to the White House. Mr.
MacEnulty has now been to South Africa three times, where
our teachers there are now teaching 1,400 kids a week and
many more elsewhere.
David Berman himself also did a session with some forty
individuals (teachers and students), in December 2007. As a
follow up to all of this three staff members at the Teachers
Resource Centre, Messrs Andy Browne, Vijay Sharma and
Winston Duncan have established Chess Clubs in All primary
schools.
Mr. David MacEnulty, a top chess teacher in the USA, is now
on his third visit to Anguilla. Mr. MacEnulty will conduct
a Chess workshop from June 23rd to 27th at the Teachers’
Resource Centre. To ensure the sustainability of the
programme, teachers and other volunteers, as well as
students from grades three to six, will take advantage of
the training. The Education Department is grateful to Mr.
David Berman, Mr. Myron Goldfinger and the other Covecastles
homeowners who have in the past contributed to MacEnulty’s
travel and accommodation and who this year have
contributed chess sets, teaching apparatus and clocks to
Anguilla’s schools.
