Members Of
The Valley Community Develop Social Research Skills As They
Prepare To Engage Wider Community
Date Posted: July 03, 2008
From July 02-03, 2008, members of the Valley Community were
engaged in a training workshop organized by the Valley
Community Development Steering Group in collaboration with
the Ministry of Social Development.
The workshop was designed to provide participants with the
skills needed to engage the wider community in ascertaining
the issues affecting the community and the way forward
towards the development of a youth development initiative.
Sessions sought to assist persons in defining the concept of
community, as well as to become familiar with various
Participatory Learning and Action Tools. Facilitators were
Ms. Hyacinth Augustine, Programme Officer-Youth Development
at the Department of Youth and Culture; Mrs. Ijahnya
Christian, member of the Valley Community Development
Initiative Steering Group and Youth Ambassadors Keria Hughes
and Calvin Andre Samuel. It is expected that members of the
community will during the month of July utilize the training
to conduct several transect walks and focus group
discussions in the targeted area. Also present at the
session were members of the board of the Blowing Point Youth
Development Centre, Youth Ambassadors and Members of the
National Youth Council.
The Valley Community Development Initiative is part of a
wider initiative by Ministry of Social Development to
provide services for young people in communities throughout
Anguilla. In 2007 the Ministry partnered with the Blowing
Point Community to develop the Blowing Point Youth
Development Centre, as a pilot initiative. The Centre
presently serves as focal point for after school learning
support, continuing education, and a repository for
information on youth issues.
To date, a consultation with the wider Valley Community was
held during the month of May from which members of the
Valley Community Development Steering Group were drawn. The
group has met weekly and have developed a plan to sensitise
and mobilise community members for the development of the
initiative.
