An hour of rain on Sunday morning, once again revealed
the extremely poor drainage at the Sir Vivian Richards
Cricket Ground (SVRCG) in Antigua, for the third day of the
second Test between the West Indies and Australia. The Test
has already been plagued by abysmal crowd turnouts and a
pitch that seems suitable for nothing more than
batting practice.
The moderate showers flooded the outfield to such an extent
that it took ground staff, toiling with the "Super-Sopper",
all morning and most of the afternoon to render it ready for
play to resume. It was very similar issues that forced
the rescheduling of an International Cricket Council Cricket
World Cup (ICC CWC) match between Australia and the West
Indies in 2007 at the same grounds.
When the match did resume, the West Indies were able to
take their score from 125/3 (35 overs) to 255/4 (71overs)
with Chanderpaul battling on 55 and Dwayne Bravo, beaming
with confidence after his successful IPL debut, on 29 not
out. The only wicket to fall was that of the Windies'
Skipper, Ramnaresh Sarwan, who edged a delivery from
Stuart MacGill to first slip in the 54th over
after scoring 65.

MacGill, 37, who has been struggling to have much success
against the West Indies also announced his retirement today,
saying that the current Test against West Indies in Antigua
will be his last.
The West Indies, who suffered a final day free fall to
defeat in the first Test in Jamaica, trail in this Test by
224 runs with 6 wickets remaining in the 1st innings.
Australia declared on day 2 on 479/7. |
